Be more than just a role model. Be a teacher.
The need is real.  One third of all ninth grade students in Milwaukee Public Schools in 2006-2007 were repeating the grade, having failed to earn enough credits to move on. (1) Seven out of 10 of our tenth grade students are failing in math and six out of 10 are failing in reading. Only 68% of our students graduate from high school (compared to 91% in the rest of the state). (2) Milwaukee’s students need a brighter future. This is your opportunity to stop watching from the sidelines and to take action. Start your career as an educator by applying to Milwaukee Teaching Fellows.

Teach where you are needed most; impact the lives of your students.
Milwaukee Teaching Fellows seeks outstanding professionals and recent graduates to make a difference in the lives of the students who most need you. This highly-selective program is designed to recruit and train socially-driven individuals, like you, who want to make a difference in the Milwaukee community by becoming teachers in some of our highest-need public schools. The Teaching Fellows program will offer over 50 new teachers this year the opportunity to join this selective accelerated route into the classroom. We are looking for outstanding candidates to teach math, science, special education, and elementary bilingual education in Milwaukee Public Schools.

Candidates will benefit from a streamlined application and selection process and, if selected, will have the opportunity to participate in an intensive Training Institute in summer 2009 before entering their classrooms as full-time teachers in the fall. Fellows will pursue their teaching license at a state-approved university while teaching full-time, and first year Fellows will be eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award that will help defer the cost of this licensure coursework. Fellows will receive a full-time teachers’ salary once they begin teaching in the fall.

There is no one profile of an ideal Milwaukee Teaching Fellows candidate. Fellows may be fresh out of college and ready to leverage their academic success into a teaching career. Fellows may be professionals with years of experience in the business or non-profit world who are ready to change careers to make an impact where they are most needed. As a Fellow, you will become part of a dynamic and dedicated network of new educational leaders, working with other progressive educators in Milwaukee to raise academic achievement in Milwaukee Public Schools...starting in your classroom.
